The Department of Veterans’ Affairs is claiming an 88-year-old veteran didn’t report his income correctly, which led to him being overpaid almost $5,000.

Veteran Sam was forced to pay back the $4,734.53 after it was over was overpaid to him in his pension over a seven-year period.

The department says Sam failed to report the changing value of his shares.

Ray Hadley contacted the department who said they would look into Sam’s case as a priority.

Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Darren Chester says “it’s a regrettable case”.

“I have a great responsibility for taxpayers’ money.

“Part of that obligation is to make sure veterans who receive income support actually report their income accurately.”
