‘He was 1000% right’: Imam backs Prime Minister’s stance on Bourke Street attacker
Imam Mohammad Tawhidi has defended comments made by the Prime Minister, which label the Bourke Street attacker a “radical, extremist terrorist”.
On Friday, 30-year-old Somali-born Hassan Khalif Shire Ali tried to blow up his ute in Melbourne’s CBD, before stabbing three men.
One man was killed and two others were injured in the attack.
Shire Ali was shot after lunging at police with a knife. He later died of his injuries.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison says Shire Ali was a “radical, extremist terrorist” and it’s a “lame excuse” to suggest mental health problems could be to blame for the attack.
His comments have been criticised, with some saying the PM is “politicising” the issue.
But Mohammad Tawhidi, also known as the Imam of Peace, is defending Mr Morrison’s stance.
“I think the Prime Minister did the right thing,” he tells Ben Fordham.
“He defined the problem, it is radical, Islamist, extremist, violent Islam.
“He has nothing to apologise for. I think he was very brave in doing that and he was 1000% right.”
