Calls for tougher sentences as domestic violence murderers dodge life in jail
Victims advocates are calling for tougher sentences to be imposed on domestic violence murders, as another woman allegedly dies at the hands of her partner.
The 63-year-old woman was found lying on the floor of a Tweed Heads unit last night with critical injuries. She died at the scene.
Her partner was arrested and has been charged with her murder.
The latest arrest comes amid revelations reported in the Daily Telegraph, that not one domestic violence killer has been given life behind bars in NSW in the last 27 years.
Victims advocate Howard Brown tells Ben Fordham it’s “absolutely ridiculous”.
“When you look at the greater majority of these murders they all fall in the upper range of seriousness.”
Mr Brown says we need to send a “clear message” that we don’t accept soft sentences.
“They should sentence the person in relation to the abject seriousness at the time of the offence.
“And if that means you put them in jail for life, that’s what you do.”
