A lashing of rain is expected to soak Sydney, with a month’s worth predicted to fall on the city in the space of six hours.

A severe weather warning is in place, and with emergency crews bracing for flash flooding, hazardous surf and winds averaging 70km an hour.

The bureau says between 50 to 100 millimetres is expected to fall in the CBD, with an even heavier downpour in the west.

The worst of the weather is due smack bang in the middle of the morning commute.

NSW Transport Coordinator-General Marg Prendergast says it’s not going to be good.

“We know it’s going to cause havoc on the road network and through transport, and so if you have to travel you’re going to expect delays,” she tells Ben Fordham.

“Our message to businesses is that if your staff can work at home tomorrow, and they’re not critical in the office, that would be the best outcome.”
