Government hits back at ‘identity war’, vows to keep gender on birth certificates
The federal government has pledged to override plans by some states to remove gender from birth certificates.
Tasmania’s lower house has already passed legislation that would allow leaving gender off birth certificates.
But the federal government isn’t having the idea.
Assistant Treasurer Stuart Robert says “it’s not just reckless, it’s madness”.
He says it would interfere with the ability to appropriately plan services.
“A dose of common sense would help here,” he tells Ben Fordham.
“We need to know who are men, who are women so we can plan properly for the various services we have.
“And if you start taking that off on some identity war and some identity drive we just simply won’t be able to plan anymore.”
