A house fire in Sydney’s Inner West has killed an elderly woman, whose son raced to the scene to try and fight the flames.
The victim’s neighbour Mary phoned Triple Zero at about 10.30pm after hearing the woman’s screams.
She also rang her neighbour’s son who lives in the same street and raced over to save his mother.
He suffered minor burns and smoke inhalation while attempting to extinguish the fire and has been taken to hospital.
When firefighters arrived, they found the property engulfed in flames.
The victim, aged in her 90s, couldn’t be revived after being critically injured in the blaze.
Police remain at the scene as they investigate the cause of the fire.
Mary says her neighbour was a special person.
