Sydney has put on a memorable firework display, dazzling crowds around the harbour and the world.

As the clock struck midnight, colours burst from the Harbour Bridge and barges on the water with the crowd cheering the start of the new year.

The 12-minute show was a record breaker with new effects, a brighter bridge display and more pyrotechnics than ever before.

Gold, silver and purple displays pulsated to the late Aretha Franklin’s ‘A Natural Woman’.

Summer is also being celebrated with new lime and peach colours, as well as heart-shaped fireworks and smiley faces flying off the Harbour Bridge.

Just under two million people are estimated to have watched the stunning display in person, while globally, an estimated one billion saw the show from their TV screens.

3000 police officers kept a close eye on crowds as part of their high-visibility operation, focusing on public safety, alcohol-related crime and anti-social behaviour.

They’ve praised the patience of the crowds impacted by delays on the train system due to the storm in the early evening.

35 people were arrested and charged with a total of 43 offences.

The majority of Sydney’s roads have re-opened after being closed for the fireworks spectacular.

The Sydney Harbour Bridge, key roads north of Goulburn street and roads around Pyrmont are open.
