Set to swelter: Scorching temperatures expected as heatwave conditions hit
Temperatures are expected to hit the mid-40s in parts of New South Wales, as a heatwave conditions hit parts of south-eastern Australia.
Broken Hill is tipped to reach 45°C but Victorians are set to bear the real brunt of the scorching heat.
Melbourne is forecast to reach 42°C today and the mercury could hit 47°C around the Victorian border.
A total fire ban is in place for the whole of the state.
The scorching heat is also expected to hit parts of New South Wales and Sydney’s west could see a top of 39°C.
Authorities have issued a warning for the hot weather, encouraging people to stay cool and keep an eye on those who are most vulnerable – the elderly and those with chronic disease.
“The best thing you can do is avoid the heat as much as you can,” NSW Health Director of Environmental Health Dr Richard Broome tells Deborah Knight.
“Trying to stay indoors, particularly in air-conditioned spaces, can be very helpful.”
Dr Broome says people should also make sure to drink plenty of water.
