Nice guys can finish first: Aussie tennis star John Millman’s astonishing rise
Australian tennis has been bogged down in recent years.
We have two of the game’s most gifted young talents in Nick Kyrgios and Bernard Tomic.
But neither of them like the sport and are now more famous for their outbursts at the media, fans, players, umpires and, most recently, Davis Cup Captain Lleyton Hewitt.
But there are other Aussie players shining a light on the sport, with Alex De Minaur proving he’s a star of the future.
And journeyman John Millman has overcome years of injuries to battle his way up the world rankings.
The highlight of his career came at the 2018 US Open when he beat Roger Federer to make the quarter-finals.
Millman joins John Stanley for an in-depth look at life on the pro tour, admitting it’s been anything but easy.
“It’s been a battle for sure, I’ve had to work really hard at it.
“But it’s definitely been worthwhile.”
The 29-year-old from Brisbane is now ranked 37th in the world, having amassed almost $2.5 million in prize money.
He tells John what it’s like being in the changing rooms with the likes of Federer, Nadal and Djokovic now that he’s well and truly earned their respect.
