Safety issues have emerged during a trial of new laws forcing drivers to slow to 40km/h when passing stopped emergency service vehicles.

There’s concern about the danger in making drivers suddenly hit their brakes on a busy highway.

After campaigning for their introduction, police and the NRMA are backflipping on the ‘Slow Down, Move Over’ laws.

NSW Police Association President Tony King says the 40-km speed limit should be dropped, and a more general rule imposed for drivers to slow down.

He tells Ben Fordham it’s about “common sense legislation “.

“It was never meant to be about speed or speed restrictions, it’s was about slow down, move over.”
