Australian scientists have made a potential breakthrough in the treatment of peanut allergies.

Researchers have conducted a successful trial injecting allergy sufferers with peanut proteins in an attempt to raise their tolerance of the nut.

Patients were all desensitised to the allergens and none suffered any potentially deadly effects.

Associate Professor Mark Hew, head of the Allergy, Asthma, and Clinical Immunology Unit at The Alfred Hospital, tells Ben Fordham the next stage of the study will determine how well the treatment works.

“The phase two study… will be the cruncher, to tell us whether it’s effective and how effective it is at protecting peanut sufferers.”
