The state election is sneaking up on us and we’ve compiled a quick guide for when you go to vote.

Voters will head to the polls on Saturday, March 23 from 8am to 6pm.

But if you won’t be in the state on that day, never fear, early voting opens on Monday, March 11.

Early polls will close at exactly 6pm on March 22, the night before election day.

So, how does the voting work?

You’ll be given two different ballot forms:

• the Legislative Assembly (the lower house of the NSW Parliament)
• the Legislative Council (the upper house of the NSW Parliament)

Not sure if you’re on the electoral roll?

If you’re not on the electoral roll you can produce ID at the election venue and vote that day, and your details will be sent off for approval and added to the roll for future elections.

At the last federal election, about 18,000 people voted more than once, but NSW Electoral Commissioner John Schmidt tells Alan Jones there are some provisions to help prevent that happening in NSW.

“With pre-polling, internet voting and postal voting we have real time electronic mark off.

“It hasnt been rolled out as yet for the final vote on election day.”
