Inmate dies of suspected overdose in Kempsey jail
An inmate has died at the Mid North Coast Correctional Centre at Kempsey.
Ray Hadley received a tip-off that a prisoner died from a suspected drug overdose over the weekend.
A 24-year-old man is believed to have died after taking ice on Sunday.
Corrective Services NSW have now confirmed the death, and are investigating.
Corrective Services NSW statement:
“Corrective Services NSW extends its sympathies to the family and friends of a 24-year-old-man who died at the Mid North Coast Correctional Centre on Sunday (21 April).
Corrective Services NSW and NSW Police are investigating the incident.
All deaths in custody are subject to a coronial inquest.
We support the coronial investigation and are assisting fully the NSW Police and the Coroner.”
It’s believed authorities are scanning CCTV footage and trying to determine how the inmate obtained the drugs.
