Greens Senator plans to make catcalling illegal
A Greens Senator has announced plans to make catcalling illegal in Australia.
The plan, proposed by Queensland Greens Senator Larissa Waters, is modelled on French legislation that forbids many forms of sexual harassment.
On-the-spot fines of up to $6,600 would be given to those who wolf whistle and make sexually charged comments in public.
But Sam Macedone from Macedone Legal tells Ben Fordham the laws wouldn’t be easy to implement.
“It’s gonna be difficult to prove in a lot of cases, because how do you know who the guy is on the fourth level of a building who’s whistling?
“It’s a pretty brave call, I mean we’re getting to the stage where you can’t say or do anything.
“But then again this sort of conduct should not be tolerated under any circumstances.”
