Senator Cory Bernardi has announced he will officially deregister his Australian Conservatives Party.

The Senator left the Liberal Party in 2017 to form his own party, which has 22,000 members, but has now admitted the Australian Conservatives “isn’t really viable” moving forwards.

He will move to deregister it ahead of the deadline on June 30.

Senator Bernardi tells Ben Fordham things have changed since the Liberals ousted Malcolm Turnbull.

“Everything changed when the Liberal Party basically changed the Prime Minister. They dumped Malcolm Turnbull and moved to Scott Morrison and our members and our supporters who wanted the traditional Liberal values back started that migration themselves.

“The election result was telling. Not only did the Coalition win what I think is an extraordinary victory, but we did particularly badly because the people we were appealing to went back to their natural home.”

There has been widespread speculation Senator Bernardi will rejoin the Liberal Party, but he tells Ben he hasn’t made any decisions yet.

“It’s something for the next round of contemplation.”
