John ‘Wacka’ Williams is loved from both side of politics and has left his mark in Parliament.

But Nationals Senator John Wacka Williams is preparing to retire on June 1, after 11 years in Parliament.

Wacka is making the move to focus on his family.

The former farmer took on sitting member Sandy Macdonald in 2007 to win preselection for the Nationals and begin his time in politics.

Mr Williams was the only senator in government to cross the floor and vote in favour of a banking royal commission.

He tells Ben Fordham he has already handed back his pass.

“I’ve just resigned to the fact that life goes on, you’re not in Parliament forever.

“If you can go there, like I was there for 11 years, and do some good for the Australian people, do some good for your country, do some good for the battlers and the people who support you, then I’m satisfied with that.”
