The Institute of Public Affairs is warning the government’s proposed religious discrimination laws could actually curb religious freedoms.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced his government would draft new laws that would stop employers from firing workers due to their religious views.

It comes after Israel Folau was sacked by Rugby Australia for making homophobic comments on Instagram.

But John Roskam from the Institute of Public Affairs tells John Stanley they have “grave concerns” about any legislation that could curb freedom of speech.

“The key problem is that as soon as you define religion and discrimination you are handing over to the Human Rights Commission and to the courts what is legitimate for us to say.

“We think that is hugely problematic… this won’t fix the Israel Folau situation. 

“We have seen the Human Rights Commission can’t be trusted with our freedoms.”
