Police have fatally shot a man after a stand-off on the state’s mid-north coast.

Officers were called to the Taree home just after 1pm yesterday after concerns were raised about a man inside, who was armed with a knife.

Police negotiators tried to speak with the 40-year-old before a tactical response team forced their way inside at about 10.15pm, more than nine hours after the siege began.

Officers say the man threatened them with a “large knife”, forcing them to shoot him with a taser and to deploy “other tactical options”.

When that didn’t work, police say they were forced to shoot the man.

Paramedics treated him at the scene before rushing him, to hospital, where he died a short time later.

A Critical Incident Investigation Team will now look into the incident and all information will be subject to independent review before being provided to the Coroner.
