Doctor sets the record straight on late-term abortions
A Sydney gynaecologist and obstetrician has set the record straight amid concerns a bill to decriminalise abortion in NSW would allow terminations right up until birth.
The bill would allow terminations on request for women who are up to 22 weeks pregnant. After this time, women may have an abortion if two doctors agree it is necessary for physical, social or psychological reasons.
Although Ray Hadley supports a woman’s right to choose, he’s concerned the bill doesn’t do enough to prevent late-term abortions.
The bill will be put forward by Independent Member for Sydney Alex Greenwich, who tells Ray it will actually put in greater safeguards for late terminations.
“Currently that is done with the oversight of just one doctor, in consultation with the AMA, the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.
“We thought that needed to be strengthened, so we added the additional safeguard of a second doctor.”

The former deputy prime minister Barnaby Joyce rang in to tell Ray he’s concerned the legislation allows a full-term baby to be aborted.
“At the very least this needs to go to an inquiry.”
During his call, a senior gynaecologist and obstetrician from south-western Sydney rang in to set the record straight on how late-term abortions are currently performed.
He says the process is actually stricter now than it would be under the new legislation.
“For any termination of pregnancy after 20 weeks there has to be established what is called an ethics committee.
“I don’t think that two doctors should be making this decision for late termination. I think it has to be a committee of doctors and a psychiatrist.”
