Scott Morrison has pledged hundreds of millions of dollars to the Pacific Islands to help them tackle climate change.

The Prime Minister made the $500 million promise ahead of his meeting with Pacific leaders in Tuvalu on Wednesday.

But Steve Price says the pledge is bizarre and out of place.

“It’s one thing to provide foreign aid for smaller countries in our region… but to do it off the basis of the fact that climate change is going to mean they sink is disingenuous.”

Rita Panahi says these countries need to stop demanding money from Australia.

“We heard the leader of Tuvalu being very overexcited and lecturing Australia about doing more for climate change.

“It was just a demand for more cash, which he seems to have got.

“I don’t know why we’re responsible for writing cheques for the rest of the world.”

She says the situation in the Pacific Islands is not nearly as dire as it’s often made out to be, citing a University of Auckland study that found the size of the islands is actually growing.

“Between 1971 and 2014 it’s actually grown… their total land area has increased by 2.9 per cent.

“A lot of these dire predictions that we have heard over the last 20 years haven’t actually amounted to much.”
