Australians are being encouraged to learn CPR and how to use a defibrillator in honour of World Restart a Heart Day.

You never know when a loved one might desperately need your help to save their life after a cardiac arrest.

75 per cent of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur in the home, which means family members can play a vital role in saving lives.

That’s why ordinary people around the world are being encouraged to educate themselves on CPR.

NSW Ambulance Commissioner Dominic Morgan tells Luke Grant they’re encouraging everyone to just give it a go, even if it’s simply following the instructions of an emergency operator. 

“What we know is that for every minute of cardiac arrest your chances of survival deteriorate by seven to 10 per cent. That means that if it takes ten minutes for an ambulance to get there, things are looking pretty grim.

“That’s why for Global Restart A Heart Day, we’ve got to partner with the community to get people to have a go.”
