‘We are not going to bury and forget’: Veterans’ mothers band together in push for royal commission

The mothers of six veterans who took their own lives have banded together to call for a royal commission into veteran suicide.

The Department of Veteran Affairs cannot account for how many veterans have died by suicide but insist a royal commission isn’t necessary.

Alan Jones is joining these women in calling for a royal commission.

“I just can’t believe people can be so heartless. This is mongrel stuff.”

Julie-Ann Finney’s son Dave spent two decades serving in the Australian Navy.

But in February, he lost his battle with PTSD, after being told he had to wait six months to see a psychiatrist.

Julie-Ann tells Alan she was disgusted after hearing Veterans Affairs Minister Darren Chester had said, “we have to shout the positives and whisper the negatives”.

“Well I’m not going to whisper the negatives, I’m going to shout the negatives, I’m going to shout my son’s name… I’m going to shout them all,” she says.

“Because we are not going to bury and forget 500 of Australia’s bravest.

“They make them, they break them and they throw them away.”

Alan also spoke with Glenda Weston who lost her son, Bradley Carr, after he struggled for years to get access to a Gold Card which would have ensured ongoing care for the veteran.
