Introduction of unisex toilets prompts safety concerns

Article image for Introduction of unisex toilets prompts safety concerns

There are concerns for women’s safety after the introduction of unisex public toilets.

The Hobart City Council has decided on a poster to be displayed in public toilets, with the words “We all need somewhere to go. If we accept that our bodies come in all different shapes and sizes and respect each other’s privacy, then everybody can feel safe in here.”

Although transgender activists argue it is not explicit enough others argue it is sending “mixed messages”.

Women Speak Tasmania spokesperson Isla McGregor tells Ben Fordham this poses safety risks.

“Women will be too afraid to challenge any person who looks like a male in sex-segregated toilets.

“Biological women are entitled to be safe.”
