#CanThePlan: Thousands of farmers ‘Convoy to Canberra’ in drought protest

Thousands of farmers are descending upon Canberra calling for the government to ‘Can the Plan’.

They’re demanding the Murray-Darling Basin Plan be fixed or scrapped to end the political drought being created in much of New South Wales.

The river has plenty of water but drought-ravaged farmers are being forced to watch it flow past due to the Commonwealth’s water management plan.

One of the organisers of the Convoy to Canberra, Carly Marriott, says the government is already starting to listen.

“Things are going really well, we’ve had a win! We’re going to be talking to Sussan Ley and David Littleproud later today,” she told Alan Jones.

“These guys are going to listen to us. We’re not going home empty-handed and we’re not going home without water.”

Carly has updated Steve Price on the enormous turnout.

“I would say there’s probably a couple of thousand people on the ground and easily two hundred trucks circling Federation Mall at Parliament House.

She has stern words ready for her meeting with the ministers.

“We, the people who live and breathe this environment are coming to say enough’s enough. You can jam your plan. Listen to us, and we’ll help you fix it, but do not think you can push ahead with this and get away with it.”

Steve shares her disbelief at the mismanagement of the Murray-Darling water and agrees letting farmers use it should be an easy decision.

“Even a non-farming, city-dwelling person like myself can work that out.”
