Men made up about 80 per cent of drownings in the last decade, according to new data.

The Royal Life Saving Society Australia reports 32 per cent of the 2855 deaths involved alcohol.

In NSW 780 men drowned over the decade, while in Queensland there were 556 male deaths by drowning.

Royal Life Saving Society Australia CEO Justin Scarr tells Luke Grant a high number of deaths occurred in lakes and dams.

“People kayak, they fish and camp by these rivers… but below the surface, there’s snags and currents and cold water in many places.”
