Warren Moore reflects on covering the Newcastle earthquake 30 years ago
Macquarie Radio presenter Warren Moore has reflected on what it was like covering the 1989 Newcastle earthquake.
Tomorrow will mark the 30th anniversary of the earthquake, which measured 5.6 on the Richter scale and killed 13 people when it hit on December 28, 1989.
The earthquake also injured more than 160 people and damaged 40,000 homes.
Warren Moore tells Natalie Peters and Erin Molan he was working as a journalist in Newcastle at the time.
“It wasn’t immediate to a lot of people that it was an earthquake. I was in the Hunter Valley coalfields at the time, so my initial thoughts were that it was a mine collapse.”
