Toyota’s radical C-HR compact SUV gets an update including hybrid technology

Motor Torque

Back in 2017 Toyota launched a rather unusual compact SUV the C-HR – a radically styled SUV for Toyota – C-HR standing for compact high-rider – a real crossover vehicle – a cross between a hatchback, coupe and SUV. I said at the time it was an enormously clever piece of design although for some it may be a little too radical.  The C-HR update includes a slight visual makeover plus a hybrid model for the first time. Toyota has deleted the slow selling entry manual grade – the 1.2-litre turbo four-cylinder petrol engines carryover, mated to CVT or continuously variable automatics, available in standard and high-grade Koba, both in either 2WD or AWD. The entry 2WD auto now $29,540. The new Hybrid C-HR auto is not offered in AWD, only available in 2WD in high-grade Koba form at $36,440. It teams a 1.8-litre petrol engine with an electric motor with combined output of 90kW. The small visual updates are a new front bumper design, new LED headlights and new 17 or 18-inch alloy wheels dependent on model, the Koba models also getting new LED tail-lights. Driving the Koba hybrid is a very pleasant and satisfying experience – quiet, super smooth and with rapid acceleration from rest – Toyota claim fuel consumption of 4.3L/100 – I managed 4.7 L in mainly city driving. You pay more for the CH-R hybrid but save more in the long run with frugal economy.
