Minister warns of ‘hotspots’ on public transport as passenger limits ease
The number of passengers allowed on public transport will almost double from July 1 as NSW eases restrictions further.
More green dots will be added, indicating where people can sit or stand on public transport.
From next month 23 people will be allowed on a bus, 68 on a train, 40 on a light rail carriage and 65 on a metro carriage.
Previously, the NSW government had limited the number of people on buses to 12 and train carriages to 32 in order to adhere to physical distancing.
NSW Transport Minister Andrew Constance told Mark Levy passenger volume is down 60 per cent, but stressed commuters should continue to avoid peak travel times where possible.
“We do have parts of the day, particularly between 6am and 7am we have a lot of tradies and construction workers moving around, so that’s a bit of a hotspot.
“At the end of the school day, between 3:30pm and 5pm, there’s another concentration there.”
Mr Constance also urged Sydneysiders to avoid taking public transport for short journeys, and opt for walking or cycling instead.
“We allow those in the outer suburbs a lot more flexibility because we’re not choking the system with people who do only require a one-stop trip.”
