At least 60 people, including 12 US military personnel, have been killed in an attack on Kabul Airport in Afghanistan.

Two suicide bombers set off explosives outside the international airport in Kabul amid US-led withdrawal efforts.

The United States believes Islamic State affiliate group ISIS-K is responsible for the attack.

US correspondent Harley Carnes told Ben Fordham the Taliban was in charge of security to prevent any suicide bombers.

“The US military death toll is expected to go up.”

Deakin University Professor of Global Islamic Politics Greg Barton described the terror attack as “the shape of things to come” in the violence-stricken country.

“This is not going to be the last such attack,” he told Jim Wilson.

ISIS-K terrorists have previously carried out attacks on a girls’ school and maternity ward, and assassinated female journalists.

“There’s been so many things about Afghanistan that have moved much more quickly than anyone really estimated.”

The outlook now for Australians stuck in Afghanistan is “grim, but not hopeless” as they attempt to escape with US and UK forces or across land borders.
