Why bereaved son ‘feels sorry’ for September 11 attackers 20 years on
The families of the ten Australians who died in the September 11 2001 attacks are mourning the 20th anniversary of their loved ones’ deaths.
Comedian and author of 9/11 and the art of happiness Simon Kennedy lost his mother Yvonne in the terror attacks.
The retiring Red Cross worker decided to go on her dream holiday to America, only to board a plane that was hijacked and flown into the Pentagon.
He told Ben Fordham “it’s hard to fathom” that it’s been two decades since her death.
Mr Kennedy was given the confronting opportunity to stare down members of the terrorists behind the attacks, at a pre-trial hearing in Guantanamo Bay.
“I stood there and I thought to myself, I kind of feel sorry for you mate.
“I can’t bring my mum back, but he couldn’t affect the life that I lived beyond that point, and I made it my duty to live a really good life and … love and laugh.
“Looking at him, he had no future ahead of him.”
