Secret tunnels and bodies exhumed: The past and present of Australia’s busiest station

The hub of Sydney’s transport network – its workers and its secrets – are the subject of a new SBS documentary.

Inside Central Station: Australia’s Busiest Railway premieres on SBS this Sunday 12 September at 7:30pm.

Sydney Trains Events Transport Manager and employee of 26 years Garry Massoud told Deborah Knight the Central Station we know today was actually the third to be built, and was constructed where a cemetery once stood.

“We have Mortuary Station located just north of Central Station, where we exhumed all the bodies … and those coffins were all taken by rail out to a cemetery to Botany and then taken to La Perouse.

“Under all the organised chaos that you see at the station, there are some disused tunnels that we have under Central.

“The [tunnels] under St James are probably the most popular and historical … they’ve actually converted into air raid centres during the Second World War.”
