Energy Minister touts hydrogen over nuclear amid multimillion-dollar investment

The federal Energy Minister has again knocked back a civil nuclear power supply in Australia, in favour of hydrogen fuel.

The Hunter has been identified as a potential hydrogen hub, as part of a $150 million investment from the federal government.

Energy Minister Angus Taylor told Chris Smith the government is watching research into small modular reactors closely, but would need bipartisan support from Labor to even consider lifting the nuclear ban.

“Hydrogen can do things that nuclear could never do anyway.

“It’s not only a source of energy, it’s a feedstock.

“For those of you … eating their cornflakes this morning, it is made possible because of the role hydrogen plays in producing our fertiliser.”
