Prime Minister’s absence from global climate conference ‘preposterous’
Prime Minister Scott Morrison appears unlikely to attend the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) in Glasgow at the end of the month.
Energy and Industry Minister Angus Taylor told Deborah Knight the Prime Minister hasn’t made a final decision on attending yet, but pointed out he’s already spent more than 50 days in quarantine so far.
“His first focus will be on Australia … not [on] international bureaucrats or conferences.
“The Prime Minister has to get the balance right here.”
Despite often contradicting the Opposition’s climate policy, Labor MP Joel Fitzgibbon “vehemently disagreed” with Mr Taylor’s stance, arguing Mr Morrison needs to “front up and argue our case”.
“It’s preposterous, the idea that Scott Morrison might not be there.
“He doesn’t need to … promote a more aggressive stance on climate change, he might want to argue that he’s there to make sure that the conference doesn’t overreach on climate change.
“Either way, Deb, we’ve got to be part of the conversation.”
