Paul Gallen proposes pay deductions as NRL weighs up vaccine mandate dilemma
The NRL has refused so far to introduce mandatory vaccination for players, despite imposing the requirement on fans, but could face legal repercussions as a result.
Sharks great and 2GB rugby league commentator Paul Gallen defended the NRL’s decision to avoid a vaccine mandate, but told Jim Wilson players will have to “face the consequences” of their personal choice.
He suggested players who can’t play games interstate or overseas as a result of their vaccine status have the value of those games deducted from their pay.
“If you’re a Queensland player or a New Zealand Warriors player, you’re virtually halving your contract straight away.
“I’d hit them straight in the hip pocket, because let me tell you, that’s where it hurts an NRL player the most.”

Macedone Legal principal Sam Macedone told Jim under the law, the NRL does have a right to introduce a vaccine mandate if they so wish.
“The whole thing is an obligation and a responsibility to protect other members of the community.”
If an unvaccinated player was to infect teammates and support staff, the NRL could be held liable, he explained.
