The Environment Minister has suggested the Nationals may not be representing rural Australia as well as they think in their opposition to net zero.

The Coalition has been negotiating a deal, with the Liberals trying to win the Nationals’ support of a 2050 net zero emissions policy to take to next month’s Glasgow climate summit.

Environment Minister Sussan Ley told Deborah Knight “the dial has shifted” when it comes to support for net zero in the regions.

“I’m both the Environment Minster and a rural member of parliament who represents western NSW … and the two sides of my job both agree with each other very wholeheartedly.”

While regional communities do rely on mining jobs, she admitted, “the jobs will be different in the future, and we have to recognise that.

“People in my area get a bit fed up of all this Canberra talk.”
