John Barilaro settles defamation claim against YouTuber friendlyjordies
Former deputy premier John Barilaro’s defamation case against YouTuber Jordan Shanks, AKA friendlyjordies, has been settled.
Mr Barilaro has accepted an apology issued by Mr Shanks in relation to a series of videos Mr Barilaro claimed were defamatory and racist (see full statement from both parties below).
2GB court reporter Gil Taylor told Ray Hadley Mr Shanks has agreed to pay $100,000 in court costs, but will not pay damages.
“The matter is now over, but his case against Google, my understanding is that’s going to continue.
“Freedom of expression for political communication is important, there’s no doubt about that, but … it does depend on the wording.
“It’s a bit of a minefield but people need to be careful.”
