Jazz legend reveals his past aboard Communist Chinese cruise ship
Australian vocalist and trumpeter Vince Jones has shared his journey to becoming one of the country’s most recognised jazz artists.
He told Deborah Knight it was always his ambition to become a singer.
“My older sister was a better singer than me, so I competed all my life to be better than her.
“We worked on cruise ships when we were teenagers … I was only quite young, and so was she.
“It was a Communist Chinese cruise ship, and they were trying to crack into the European Australian market.
“It was fantastic fun, but we sang three sets a night, seven nights a week.”
Jones will cover and “interpret” Van Morrison’s masterpieces in an event next Friday in Chatswood, accompanied by a live orchestra.
“It’s a big, fat, lovely sound.”
