Transport planner reveals truth about toll roads and traffic congestion
Do additional road tolls really help ease traffic congestion? In a word, no, says an expert.
UTS transport planner Dr Michelle Zeibots explained to Jim Wilson Sydney experiences “induced traffic growth” every time a new toll road is built.
“Traffic congestion, generally, in any city is only as good as the speed of the parallel public transport lines.
“Tolls … don’t make things faster, what they can be used to do is to build more roads.
“But more roads, in and of themselves, don’t get rid of congestion.”
Dr Zeibots raised concerns additional road infrastructure and tolls are advancing private operators at the expense of Sydney’s residents.
“There’s a lot of it that’s not in the public interest, and I’m getting very worried now.”
