How a Frenchman in sandals got the Campbell sisters out of the pool
Australian sisters and Olympic gold medallists, Cate and Bronte Campbell have opened up about life as elite athletes.
Cate Campbell reveals her struggles with body image in the book Sister Secrets, and admitted to Deborah Knight it’s still something she deals with.
“When I get stressed the first thing I want to do is restrict my eating. Bronte sits next to me at competitions and just feeds me carbs!
“Despite being an elite athlete, and running around in my swimmers most of the time, I really, really, struggle with the idea that skinniest is best.
“There used to be a lot of chatter around the pool deck about who has put on weight and what people’s skin folds were.
“It took going and seeking help from a nutritionist who said to get better you have to eat more … if you want to swim again.”
The sisters were grateful for their beloved coach, who instilled a love of bad puns in the pair by allowing them out of the pool early if they came up with a ‘dad joke’.
Cate recalled her favourite, not amusing Bronte in the least.
“What do you call a Frenchman in sandals?”
