Copy, paste, replace: ‘Outdated ideas’ in sentencing to undergo reform
The drafting of legal reforms in NSW is underway to bring retrospective justice to adult victims of sexual and domestic violence offences.
The law was updated in 2018 to sentence historic cases of child sexual abuse in accordance with modern standards, with the support of Labor and the Greens.
NSW Attorney-General Mark Speakman is hopeful a “copy and paste” of those changes, adapted for adult victims of crime, will also receive bipartisan support.
“It’s a relatively straightforward amendment,” he told Ray Hadley.
“If we now say that the legal system has got it wrong in the past with outdated ideas and practices, we won’t be perpetuating the error.
“I’m confident we’ll be introducing it early in the new year.”
