The federal government will seek to end the exorbitant cost of fixing or replacing specialist equipment with a slate of ‘right to repair’ laws.

The Productivity Commission has recommended the overhaul, with consumers forced to choice between being slugged by manufacturers or risk voiding warranties with generic parts.

Environment Minister Sussan Ley told Deborah Knight farmers in her own electorate are in a “terrible bind”, left hundreds of thousands of dollars out of pocket.

“They’re working 24/7, they actually don’t sleep, they barely eat … and then they have a break down.”

She gave assurances the government will act on the recommendations.

“It’s not in my portfolio, it’s in the Treasury portfolio, but [we’re] totally committed.

“I’m very confident this won’t just gather dust on the shelf.”
