The final sitting week of parliament has been beset by incidents of rowdiness and accusations of abuse levelled at politicians.

Just two days after the Sex Discrimination Commissioner’s scathing review of parliamentary workplace culture was handed down, a Greens Senator has been accused of ‘slut-shaming’ a Liberal Senator, and Education Minister Alan Tudge has been stood aside for an investigation into his relationship with former media adviser Rachelle Miller.

Ms Miller has alleged her affair with Mr Tudge became emotionally and physically abusive, an allegation the Minister has “completely and utterly rejected”.

Independent Tasmanian Senator Jacqui Lambie became the centre of an earlier incident, in which she was allegedly ‘growled’ at by Victorian Senator David Van.

She told Jim Wilson the government needs to set an example and send a message to the rest of the community, including the military and universities where a toxic culture for women prevails.

“No second or third chance when it comes to abuse: you’re at the goddamn door, have the guts to sack them and get rid of them.

“It really bothers me that we just don’t have strong leadership in this country anymore to deal with it.”
