NSW Trains boss defends foreign-made fleet as union strikes cause commuter chaos
The rail workers’ union have released an ‘advent calendar’ of industrial action to be taken throughout December if their demands are not met.
Today the Sydney rail network has been thrown into chaos with union members refusing to operate 75 per cent of the fleet, forcing almost all services to run to alternative timetables.
The unions are vying for higher wages, and are refusing to drive the Korean-made new Mariyung Intercity trains over safety concerns.
NSW TrainLink CEO Dale Merrick confirmed to Jim Wilson more action is planned for next Tuesday, which could also impact the current diesel Intercity fleet if further negotiations fail.
He defended the purchase of foreign-made assets, and was “absolutely” adamant the trains are safe.
“It’s incredibly important when the government has to spend the taxpayer’s money … they need to make sure they get the absolute best possible outcome.
“It’s unfortunate that the unions and our employees are still refusing to operate that train.”
