A defence expert has rejected Tony Abbott’s take on the AUKUS deal.

The United States has committed to sending a nuclear submarine to Australia, but former prime minister Tony Abbott says Australia should opt for a British submarine instead.

Australian Strategic Policy Institute Director of Defence, Strategy and National Security Michael Shoebridge told Chris Smith “I don’t think Tony Abbott is right on this one”.

“I think we’ve got to choose the partner that is best placed to … have the right industrial infrastructure and training pipeline to support that and the one with the biggest capacity to work with us.”
