A trip to grab some dinner landed a Gladstone snake catcher in a “one in a million” rescue last night.

David Voss, a snake catcher of five years, was leaving a shopping centre last night when he received a call from a man in the same carpark.

The man had driven from Rockhampton to Gladstone that day, but only discovered he had an unwelcome stowaway after pulling up at the shops.

“[He] went back to the car and saw a snake of some sort sitting on the driver’s seat and he quickly shut the door,” Mr Voss told Chris O’Keefe.

“He was smart enough to leave the door shut and make a phone call!”

What Mr Voss first assumed would be a spotted python turned out to be something a little more deadly.

“I took one look in the car and I could see probably close to a five-foot eastern brown moving all around the place.

“Round the seats, under the seats, around the baby’s chair – everywhere, mate.”

But one detail of the hitchhiker’s journey had Chris stuck.

“So, where do you think that it was hiding, then?” he asked. “If it was sitting on the driver’s seat, it wasn’t sitting on his lap from Rocky to Gladstone…”
