Biological-sex campaigner seeks Liberal endorsement

Luke Grant

The liberal party preselection in Tony Abbott’s former seat Warringah just got a little interesting. The Financial Review tells us a campaigner for strict definitions of sex to separate male and female sporting competitors plans to seek the Liberal Party’s endorsement.

Luke Grants is joined by Katherine Deves, a 44-year-old co-founder of the Save Women’s Sport lobby group, who has been encouraged to run by a group of Liberal women where her opponent would be Zali Steggle should she get preselection.

There is one issue – the Manly Vale resident, mum of three and lawyer has not been a member of the party for more than six months continuously so would require an exemption to contest an internal ballot of party members. That’s not an easy thing to achieve but important things aren’t easy on occasions.

They say winning Warringah may be tough for the Liberal Party. A poll last month, by independent pollster Raphaella Crosby, estimated Ms Steggall’s support at 64 percent after the allocation of preferences from other candidates.
