The fascinating history of Sydney’s Goat Island
Sydney Harbour’s historic Goat Island is being returned to its Indigenous owners.
To mark the transition, author and historian Ian Hoskins joined Jim Wilson on Drive to dive into the Island’s history.
“[It has] really high quality yellow block sandstone so it was used as a quarry first up in the 1820s and 30s,” he said.
“[gun] powder magazines were made there in the 1830s,
“and believe it or not in 1900 the plague comes to Sydney … and they did some really important experiments on Goat Island.”
Mr Hoskins also spoke about the Island’s Indigenous History.
“Bennelong … he said ‘it was my island, dad gave me that’ … and there are very early accounts of him on there with Baragarroo feasting and catching fish,” he said.
“It’s a well-documented island for its Indigenous use.”
