Is working from home killing our communication skills?
The impact on our social skills is evidently due to a weakening of the vagus nerve which helps control our emotions.
Director of psychological services at the Centre For Corporate Health Rachel Clements joined Jim Wilson on Drive to explain.
“Our emotional regulation is not there, we might be quicker to anger … it also means that our levels of empathy have become very low because the social engagement system has become so weak,” she said.
“Face to face communication allows our brain to release a whole lot of amazing chemicals … that are responsible for our mood and our emotional regulation.”
Ms Clements also spoke about the results of this communication breakdown.
“We are definitely seeing an increase in workplace mediations … and an increase in psych injury claims as a result of this too,”
