A new approach to caring for people with dementia
Dementia is a degenerative disease that affects the lives of hundreds of thousands of Australians.
For many, traditional dementia care homes do not always provide the best outcomes for patients.
Tamar Krebs is the founder of Group Homes Australia, an innovative approach to dementia care, where residents are small in number and are encouraged to participate in more aspects of life.
“[Secure dementia units] feel very similar to living in a human warehouse, I couldn’t place someone that I love in a place like that,” Ms Krebs told Jim Wilson.
“Each [Group Home Australia home] has six to ten residents, and the residents get involved in everything that we do.
The demand for spots in these homes is high, however Ms Krebs will be opening multiple new homes in the coming months.
“It’s not about suffering with dementia, it’s living beyond the diagnosis,” she said.
