Attorney-General to close second bail loophole for convicted paedophiles
The NSW Attorney-General will next month seek to close a loophole allowing paedophiles convicted of historic child sex offences to avoid jail time.
Robert Van Gestel was convicted of eight offences in June but despite recently passed laws, has not been taken into custody while he awaits sentencing.
The Ray Hadley Morning Show last week reported a detention application was dismissed because an intensive corrections order, which would allow Van Gestel to serve his sentence in the community, was not off the table.
Attorney-General Mark Speakman has told Ray Hadley he will introduce legislative reform to address the loophole at the next Cabinet meeting when parliament returns in August.
He says the changes will “ensure that intensive correction orders are not available as a sentencing option for historic child sex offences under any circumstances”.
